Converting CPT already created

In regards to 'converting' CPTs. The doc says to remove the php that declared the cpt.. Is it possible to skip just that step? I ask because i am using a theme that creates cpts using its own theme created plugin. And when i try to either deactivate the plugin, there are problems. When i go to and remove the function that declares the cpts of the theme there are problems. The theme dev simply does not want to provide the needed info. And I got Types, the whole toolset because it says 'ANY' theme.
I am using types and views just fine thus far for everything else WHILE still using ACF for creating fields, I just go and put them under types control AFTER creating them with ACF.

So, I'm wondering IF I could just go to Types, and put the CPTs under Types control while not having to actually remove the php that declared them. Also, can someone please give me a brief reason why the declaration has to be removed in the first place? I ask because if I am aware of the how this actually works, like I am aware of being able to still use ACF while just doing the extra step of putting each custom field that I create under types control, everything works fine.. im hoping the same is true with types. Unfortunately I'm working with semi live site and I don't have time for alot of testing etc.
