I have solved this!
2 screenshots attached.
The 1st screenshot shows the example shortcode string that I copied from the views edit page.
The 2nd screenshot shows how that looked once pasted into the page body…you can see the span tags inside the shortcode!
I was looking at the page body in visual mode so I didn't notice the span tags.
Once I removed all the spurious tags it worked!
A lesson learnt!
