How can I get the custom excerpts to display featured image

Hi

I've created my custom post type and can upload a featured image without a problem

However the post type uses custom excerpts, is there some way I can get the custom excerpt to automatically use the thumbnail of the featured image if the post has a featured image, so that it displays on the post archive and applicable taxonomy archive pages?
